Field-scale fault reactivation experiments by fluid injection highlight aseismic leakage in caprock analogs: Implications for CO2 sequestration

چکیده
Observations on tens-of-meter scale experiments of fault activation by fluid injection conducted in shales allow exploring how aseismic and seismic events may jeopardize the integrity a sealing caprock overlying CO2 sequestration reservoir. We contrast behavior shale faults with another set carbonates. Significant leakage occurs along initially low-permeability when rupture is activated. Most pathway closes ceases pressure drops. Dilatant slip plane alone does not explain observed behavior, which also caused opening favored softness shale, structure zone that prevents fluids from diffusing into adjacent damage zone. Experiments show large amount deformation. Small-magnitude seismicity (Mw < -2.5) outside pressurized patch. Stress transferred this deformation patch can build up to stress-criticality favor seismicity. Thus, terms caprocks, leading increased permeability loss seal great concern.

Coupled Approach to Assess Caprock Deformation Caused by CO2 Injection
This study focuses on a specific problem related to the caprock deformation induced by the injection of CO2 at depth. The adopted methodology includes the development of a mathematical model that incorporates the deformable behaviour of storage media and the flow of two immiscible fluids (CO2 and water) within the aquifers while the surface rock or caprock layer is modelled as a thin plate. متن کاملsimulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water
abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
INDUCED SEISMICITY. Seismicity triggered by fluid injection-induced aseismic slip.
Anthropogenic fluid injections are known to induce earthquakes. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, and our ability to assess the seismic hazard associated with geothermal energy or unconventional hydrocarbon production remains limited. We directly measure fault slip and seismicity induced by fluid injection into a natural fault. We observe highly dilatant and slow [~4 micrometers pe...
متن کاملPore Scale Processes Associated with Subsurface CO2 Injection and Sequestration
The injection of CO2 into the Earth’s subsurface drives the fluid-rock system into “farfrom-equilibrium” conditions, which means that the fluxes that return the system to equilibrium are nonlinearly related to the generalized driving forces (e.g., chemical affinities and gradients in the fluid pressures and chemical potentials). The nonlinear response results in emergent structures and self-org...
متن کاملExperimental evaluation of in situ CO2-water-rock reactions during CO2 injection in basaltic rocks: Implications for geological CO2 sequestration
[1] Deep aquifers are potential long-term storage sites for anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The retention time and environmental safety of the injected CO2 depend on geologic and physical factors and on the chemical reactions between the CO2, the aquifer water, and the host rocks. The pH buffer capacity of the aquifer water and the acid neutralization potential of the host rocks are important fact...
